Founded in 1946 by an American and an Australian, Cathay Pacific was initially based in Shanghai but subsequently formally established in Hong Kong. Today, it is Hong Kong’s largest airline, serving over 31 million passengers in 2014 together with its subsidiary airline Dragonair. In total, Cathay Pacific flies to 203 destinations in 50 countries, as of 2014. Besides being a well-established and highly profitable airline, Cathay Pacific is also known for its service and excellence – it has won the Skytrax “Airline of the Year” award a record-setting 4 times, and is one of 7 Asian airlines rated as 5-star by Skytrax. Cathay Pacific is a member of 2 frequent-flyer programs, Marco Polo Club and Asia Miles. It is also part of the Oneworld airline alliance program.

The Cathay Pacific mobile app, also known as CX Mobile, allows you to book flights, check-in, select seats, check the flight status, and retrieve information regarding your flight. CX Mobile is available for iOS and Android devices.

Online check-in is available between 90 minutes and 48 hours before your scheduled flight, and is now also accessible on mobile web browsers. After online check-in, you may either self-print the boarding pass or issue a mobile boarding pass by keying in your mobile number. With your self-print boarding pass or mobile boarding pass, you may proceed straight to Immigration at the airport if you have no check-in baggage, or drop off your baggage at the Self Check-In Bag Drop Counter. Please check the website for details on participating airports and their minimum time requirements for using the Bag Drop service, which ranges from 45 minutes to 75 minutes before the flight. Tip for mobile boarding pass users: When you receive the SMS with the link, remember to click the link IMMEDIATELY to retrieve the boarding pass and take a screenshot of the QR Code just in case.


Self check-in kiosks are available at Hong Kong International Airport, Level 7. You can retrieve your booking by (1) inserting your Marco Polo Club or Asia Miles membership card, (2) scanning your passport, or (3) keying in your booking reference number. For those traveling to Hong Kong International Airport via the Airport Express (AEL), you may also check-in at Hong Kong or Kowloon MTR stations using the In-Town Check-In service. This service is available from 90 minutes to 24 hours before your flight, from 5.30am onwards.


The baggage allowances are 20kg for Economy Class, 25kg for Premium Economy Class, 30kg for Business Class, and 40kg for First Class, with no limits on number of pieces. Marco Polo Club and Oneworld members may also enjoy additional baggage allowances, depending on their membership tier. No single piece of baggage should weigh more than 32kg. Excess baggage charges apply depending on the zone in which you are flying. Passengers traveling directly between Hong Kong and New Zealand or Qatar enjoy additional baggage allowances – please check the website for exact details on baggage allowance based on your destination and the class of travel.


Economy seats have a 32-inch seat pitch and are 18.5-inch wide (6-inch recline), with a 9-inch personal TV. Passengers have the option of choosing seats with extra legroom, which are subject to exit row seat safety requirements. The rates for extra legroom seats are USD$130 for long-haul flights and USD$35 for short-haul flights. Asia Miles or Marco Polo Club members may use their miles to purchase these seats. Alternatively, you can purchase a Premium Economy Class seat with an extra 6-inches of legroom. Business Class seats are 81-inch long and 21-inch wide flat beds, with a 15.4-inch personal TV. First Class suites have 81-inch long and 36-inch wide flat beds with massage functions, and a 17-inch personal TV. All Cathay Pacific seats have a USB port to charge mobile devices and an AC port for laptop charging. Business and First Class seats have a multi-port connector which allows them to stream content from their electronic devices.


Cathay Pacific serves in-flight meals to all passengers. They also cater to a wide range of dietary requirements, providing diverse meal options including vegetarian meals, diabetic meals, kosher or halal meals, and even meals for young children or babies. Special meal requests should be made to the airline at least 24 hours before the scheduled flight via the ‘Manage My Booking’ online function or by contacting the local Cathay Pacific reservations office.


Cathay Pacific flights are usually known to be on time. However, you can stay updated on their flight status by using the Cathay Pacific SMS service which provides reminders on your flight and notifications on flight delays or cancellations. The SMS service can be activated by keying in your mobile number during your online booking. Another service you can use to retrieve flight information is notiFLY on Google Now.
