Jet Star

Jetstar Airways, commonly known as Jetstar, is low-cost airline from Melbourne, Australia. It is a subsidiary of Qantas, and was created in 2003 to counteract competition from low-cost airline Virgin Blue. Through its sister airlines such as Jetstar Asia (Singapore), Jetstar Pacific (Vietnam) and Jetstar Japan, it can offer a wide variety of flights through code share agreements. As a low-cost carrier, Jetstar is known for its competitive pricing as well as it coverage of the Asia Pacific region. However, as a low-cost carrier, the inflight product is very basic or non-existent and passengers should expect to pay for services that would be complimentary in a full-service carrier.

More information on the airline can be found on its website, Facebook page, or Twitter page. Jetstar Airways also has a Jetstar app, which is available on both Apple and Android devices.

Online Booking

Ticket sales are generally made online through Jetstar’s main website. The website allows passengers to make online bookings for their flights as well as purchase related products such as holiday packages, travel insurance, Airbnb apartment rentals, hotels, car hire, airport transfers, as well as the Jetstar Global SIM. Passengers are also able to manage their bookings through the website or through the Jetstar App.

Jetstar’s fleet consists of Airbus A320, Airbus A321, and Boeing 787. Jetstar’s domestic flights are configured for only economy class seats with a seat pitch of 28-29 inch and a 2-inch seat recline. Exit row seats with more legroom can be selected for an additional fee. International long-haul flights are configured with economy and business class seats. Economy Class seats on long-haul flights have a seat pitch of 31-inch and 4-inch recline, while Business Class seats have a seat pitch of 38-inch, reclines with a footrest, and come with in-seat power sockets.

Online and Mobile Check-In

Check-in times vary by route, but in general passengers may check-in online between 48 hours and 120 minutes before the flight departs. Seat selection will be at an additional cost, with selection of seats at the front of the plane and at the exit rows charged a premium. Upon check-in passengers can print their boarding passes and for selected flights a mobile boarding pass may be available as well. Depending on their flights, passengers with check-in luggage will need to arrive at the airport 30 to 60 minutes before departure time. Passengers from Hong Kong will be able to enjoy the in-town check-in service. Jetstar flights have been known to experience delays or cancellations occasionally so passengers should always check the flight status on the website or mobile app before departing for the airport.

Baggage Allowances

For Economy Class passengers, baggage allowance of 15-40 kg must be pre-purchased online (do note purchasing baggage at the airport is generally costlier). Business Class passengers have a baggage allowance of 30kg included in their fare, but may upgrade their allowance to 40 kg if needed. Carry-on baggage cannot exceed 7 kg and economy class passengers are allowed one piece each, while business class passengers are allowed 2 pieces. Details on check-in baggage restrictions and the approved dimensions for cabin baggage can be found on the website.

Service on Board

As a low-cost carrier, all extra frills such as meals, snacks, beverages, pillows or blankets must be purchased for a fee. In addition, there is no in-flight entertainment, instead entertainment units are available for hire. Passengers in business class will however be able to enjoy complimentary meals, in-flight entertainment, blankets, and pillows.

Tickets Refund and Changing Policies

Jetstar fare rules are clearly stated during the purchase of tickets so do watch out for them during booking. In general, the lowest fares are usually non-refundable and a change fee and fare difference will be required to change the time/ date of a flight. There may also be no refunds should you miss the check-in deadline or fail to board the flight.
