OKINAWA NAHA AIRPORT
Okinawa Naha Airport is classified as a regional airport located in Okinawa Prefecture of Japan. Located 4 km from the city center of Naha, Okinawa, it is the seventh busiest airport in Japan handling both domestic and international flights within the East Asia region. In 2014, Naha Airport reopened its new international terminal, adding to its domestic terminal and budget terminal. At the international terminal, the arrival and departure lobbies are located at the first two levels, restaurants and shops are located at Level 3, and the observation deck can be accessed at Level 4. Other facilities include a resting room with beds, home delivery services, lockers, baggage storage, special waiting rooms, and airline lounges. There are also coin-operated Internet terminals at a cost of 100 yen for 10 minutes of usage.
Travellers can travel to the city center by monorail, bus, or taxi. The Okinawa Monorail, also known as the Yui Rail, is a single line train service operating between Naha Airport and Shuri Station. The entire train ride takes approximately 27 minutes and each ride costs between 230-330 yen. It might be a good idea to purchase a 1-day pass at 700 yen or a 2-day pass at 1200 yen for unlimited use of the Okinawa Monorail for each day. The day passes will also give you a discount on admission fees to attractions such as the Shuri Castle, the Tamaudun Mausoleum, or the Shikinaen Garden! Naha also has an extensive bus network, however, be sure to ask your hotel for directions first as it might be confusing for tourists to navigate the bus system. The Naha Bus Terminal is located next to Asahibashi Station and there is bus fare of 230 yen per ride. Outside of the city center, it is advisable to take a taxi or rent a car as the public transport network is not as developed and bus arrival timings may not be consistent.
Okinawa has a year-round subtropical climate. Even during the winter, temperatures rarely go below 15 degree Celsius. As you might expect, Okinawa is famous for its beautiful warm beaches and vibrant marine life, making this a perfect holiday destination for all beach lovers out there. Visitors should not miss out on visiting the islands making up the Okinawa Prefecture, collectively known as Ryukyu Islands, consisting of Yaeyama Islands, Miyako Island, Kume Island, and the main Okinawa Island. Most of the beach islands have been kept close to their original form, so travellers can expect a more rustic experience as a getaway from city life. The clear blue waters allow the coral reef and colourful marine animals to be easily seen; as such snorkeling and diving are some of the more popular activities to do there. On land, there are lots of interesting natural formations to explore, such as the pools of tropical fish along coastal rocks or the Mifuga Rock formation on Kumejima Island, and the Cape Higashi-Hennazaki lighthouse or the Ikema and Kurima Bridges overlooking the ocean on Miyako Island. The best part is, these are completely free of charge!
