Koh Samui Airport (USM), officially known as Samui International Aport, is a private airport on Koh Samui Island, Thailand. The airport is located approximately 2km north of the main city as well as Chaweng—the largest resort centre of the island. The aiport attracts tourists coming from around the world for its uniqueness—it has no indoor area except for a gift shop. Despite this oddity, the airport is still Thailand’s sixth busiest airport with more than a million passengers each year. The airport is privately owned and operated by Bangkok Airways, hosting both domestic and international flights.
How to go to / from the aiport
Transportation to and from the airport is mainly by taxi or car / motorbike rental. Upon your arrival at the airport, you would easily notice the transport counter with various options to choose from, including private car taxi, private minivan taxi, shared minivan transfers, and car rentals. The queue for taxis could be long and taxis here hardly run on meters; hence, you are advised to book your taxi or minivan in advance online. Reliable taxi provider such as Samui Taxi charges about THB440 or HK$96 from Koh Samui Airport to Chaweng and the taxi driver will wait for passengers at the meeting point.
You can also go around with songthaews—pickup trucks / public passenger pick-up bus. The fare is fixed and slightly inflated for tourists as compared for locals, at THB100 or HK$22 for any trip between two cities.
Alternatively, you can also rent a motorbike almost anywhere on Koh Samui Island with price tag of between THB120 - 700 or HK$26 - 154 per day depending on the type of motorbikes and season. It is highly recommend for tourists to only rent motorbikes from reputable companies, read rental agreement carefully, inspect rented vehicles, and watch out for vehicle thefts and scams. Alternatively you can rent a car with Avis, Hertz, Sixt and Budget. Although the price could be more expensive of THB800 - 1,500 or HKD175 - 330 per day for a small car, this option is much more convenience and trust-worthy with several pick-up and drop-off points including the airport.
Things to do
The airport is largely outdoors with naturally designed structures. If you have more time to spend at this airport, the best option is to get out and explore the beautiful Koh Samui Island. One of the most popular destinations is Big Buddha temple or Wat Phra Yai, with 12-meter-tall Buddha and shops and restaurants surrounding for a quick bite and souvenirs. Another must-visit is Laem Sor Pagoda, decorated with thousands of golden bricks and shines brightly in the sun light. Aquarium and Tiger Zoo is the place for you to take pictures with tigers for THB100 or HK$22 and other exotic animals, gorgeous fish and coral collections. Koh Samui is also famous for buffalo fighting at Fighting Buffaloes with entry fees about THB100 or HK$22 for men and free for women.
