Hakodate City will introduce an accommodation tax starting April 1, 2026. Guests staying overnight will be charged a separate accommodation tax based on the accommodation fee. Under JPY20,000: JPY200, JPY20,000 to JPY50,000: JPY400, JPY50,000 to JPY100,000: JPY1,000, JPY100,000 or more: JPY2,500 *The above rates include both Hokkaido and Hakodate City accommodation taxes. *Accommodation fees include service charges but do not include meals, consumption tax, etc. *The revised rates will also apply to guests with existing reservations. *The bathing tax will be revised from JPY150 to JPY100 starting April 1, 2026. Hokkaido will begin levying an accommodation tax from April 1, 2026. The tax is calculated per person per night based on the accommodation cost, with the following rates:Less than 20,000 JPY → 100 JPY; 20,000 JPY to less than 50,000 JPY → 200 JPY; 50,000 JPY or more → 500 JPY. In addition, individual cities and municipalities may impose their own local accommodation tax, ranging from 100 to 2,000 JPY per person per night, on top of the Hokkaido tax.The accommodation cost includes the room fee and service fee, but excludes food and beverage expenses as well as consumption tax. Please note that some room rates do not include the accommodation tax; in such cases, the tax must be paid separately at the front desk.
