If Tokyo is cutting-edge and futuristic, Kyoto is traditional and steeped in culture and history. Both cities are worth several days of wandering, but Kyoto has an allure with its many temples, paths, and winding alleys that can be found nowhere else in Japan.

A must-see city to get a true feel for Japanese culture. There are temples and shrines in almost every block, giving the city a magical quality to it. Go without an agenda and explore all the little alleys and shops. You won't regret it!

Kyoto has two sides: city and nature. The city part is all right, but the nature side is completely magical. The temples are beautiful. My only regret was not spending more time along the Philosopher's Walk, a beautiful road that leads from one great temple to the next.

We spent about 4 full days in Kyoto on our visit to Japan in November. I'd been expecting to fall in love with it and definitely to love it more than I did Tokyo, and though I did absolutely love my time there, it was much different than I'd imagined. Kyoto was far more touristy (and crowded WITH tourists) than I was expecting - more so than Tokyo, in fact. Where I'd been expecting an older, less industrial looking city, I found those pieces only to exist in small pockets and corners. The public transportation system is not quite as intuitive as Tokyo's, but still easy enough to figure out and get around on. You do wind up relying a bit more on buses in Kyoto than trains (at least, we did). There are some major, must-see sites and temples in the city, as well as access to some key day trips (such as Nara), so I had some definite highlights and great moments here, but given the option, I would likely have opted to take a day off of Kyoto and tack it back onto Takayama in the overall planning of our trip.
