Dostyk Hotel downtown. Slightly expensive and more upscale one
Its a clean hotel located on the 7th floor of the MJS Tower on the Central square. The Tower has 3 hotels and Dostyk is the quieter

Clean, Comfortable, nice hot shower, centrally located
Stayed here in September of 2025, Believe the name is now Bayan Tsambagarav Hotel so it may have changed hands. On the whole I was pleased with the hotel. Clean room, clean bathroom, comfortable bed, hot shower and quiet. Was it perfect? No. But I think it is important to put it in context and to remember you are Mongolia and this hotel is in the far western part of the country in a somewhat small city / large town.
Challenges - The AC was somewhat dysfunctional, there was a floor unit and when I turned it on the AC made a horrible noise. But being western Mongolia the temperature was rather cool so I opened the window and that worked (though closing it was an effort!).
There were basic bathroom supplies (little bars of soap, shampoo, etc.)
The TV worked though the code to gain access was 1234 (NOT 4321 as listed in the notebook on the table), or at least this was the case in my room. Asked another person and they said they didn't need to enter a code and the TV just worked.
Breakfast was basic and not up for discussion. There was a little breakfast room on the 8th floor where my room was. There was a woman preparing plates of food, you stood there and she handed it to you. You take what you are given and that's that. Perhaps if I spoke Kazak or Mongolian I might have been able to discuss options, but my sense was, not likely. It was good enough so that was that.
In terms of friendliness, the staff was professional but not overtly friendly which suits me just fine being from the Boston MA area where that is pretty much how we are and how we expect people to be.
They have you remove your shoes and put on slippers (they provide) before entering the area where the rooms are. Lockers to store your shoes are by the elevator (two lockers per room, so be sure to remember which one you put your shoes in as you might open the other one and think your shoes are missing).
Location is great, Ulgii is not a big city so you can walk to many things close to the hotel from restaurants, the museum, bazaar, grocery stores, Cashmere and Yak wool shopping, etc.
So all in all, considering where you are I would recommend and stay at this hotel again.

TERRIBLE experience! Never ever again!
TERRIBLE - TERRIBLE - i would never ever again stay at this Hotel!
The whole story was a true nightmare.
Don’t ruin your vacation by having stress at this hotel.
The hotel management and staff seems to be not capable to run this hotel and showed to us the highest ignorant and arrogant behavior which I have never seen before.
They try to make the Hotel looking nice but they don’t care about their guests at all. Feels like they want only your money but they don’t actually want you as guest.
The service is a 0 out of 10.
And finally if you have any problem about hotel issues, they kick you out of the hotel, which happened to us.

I love to travel for business and holidays.
I have visited more than 40 countries and hundreds of hotels before.
Staying at the Dostyk Hotel in Ulgii, Mongolia, was by far the worst experience I have ever had in a hotel in my whole life!
So I can just warn every guest and traveller to not fall into the same trap as we did by the “shiny” hotel pictures and overrated positive ratings on google.
Please let me explain in detail the reasons and why you should be warned.
First we thought it’s a nice hotel when we saw the nice pictures and good rating on google.
We wanted to have a bath tube and more comfort.
Therefore we booked the presidential suite for 5 nights, which is the most expensive room at this hotel for 250$ per night.
The staff from the reception showed us the room and said this is the room with jacuzzi which fits to our needs and wishes.
So finally we booked it.
Then the bad surprise started.
Day 1:
Only Cold water
1. For one full day we had only cold water and the staff tried to solve it with no result. We had to ask a couple of times until they sent a repair service to fix it after one full day.
Instead of apologizing to us for the inconvenience, the staff at the reception was annoyed that we asked again to fix it. Unbelievable
Then the next incredible event…
Day 2
Hotel equipment not working
1. As soon as we then had warm water we tried to use the jacuzzi. And this was so embarrassing. The bath tube / jacuzzi is actually not usable. There is only a 50 liter water boiler in the bathroom which cannot fill the bath tube that it can be used for a bath. As soon as the 50 liter are in the bath-tube you have to wait minimum 20 minutes until the water boiler is filled up again. In this time the water in the bath tube is already cold.
So basically one of the reasons to choose this hotel with the jacuzzi was not workable. Which was so disappointing especially because the hotel staff and management do know exactly that they use the jacuzzi just for their marketing pictures and actually deceive their customers.
After this case, which happened on the second day we asked the staff to talk directly to the hotel manager. She was in the building but told her staff said that she is not available to talk to us. - And we are talking about a small hotel with 17 rooms. I have never seen such an arrogant behavior of a hotel manager, who doesn’t see the need to satisfy her guests. Instead she told her staff that we should leave the hotel if we don’t like it.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
But this was not the end of the story…
Day 2/3
As we didn’t wanted to move and rather expected an solution and support by the hotel, they offered us after several discussion a refund of one nigh (250$), if we stay the five nights as booked.
We agreed to that offer, to avoid any further stress of changing the hotel etc. but still the whole scenario was so stressful.
Then the day after I asked when I will receive my refund, and the staff told me they will give us a refund of two nights (500$).
This was the first positive reaction. But they can only give us the money in cash the day after, they said.
Day 4
As discussed with the staff the evening before, I went to the reception to pick up the refund in cash.
Then they refused to give me the money and told us to leave the hotel without any refund.
We involved our travel guide and after very intense discussions we got back the money and had to leave the hotel immediately.
Absolutely insane!!!
This is not what you want to experience in your holidays. Better choose another hotel.
There are so many more hotels in Ulgii with much better service.
Additional tipps:
The information on the website about the rooms are wrong and misleading.
It shows air conditioner, which is not available.
It shows minibar, which is not available.
Breakfast is included but you have to pay for the coffee separately. And the breakfast is very low quality for the price you pay for the room.
All over all is the price sooooo far from the quality you get. It’s not even worth 20$ per night.
I have stayed in backpacker hostels for 10$ per night with better service, quality and food then the Dostyk in Ulgi.
Never ever again!!!

Staying at the Dostyk Hotel in Ulgii, Mongolia, was by far the worst experience I have ever had in a hotel in my whole life!

NO service mind and not prepared
Do NOT go there in your life.. ZERO service mind and overpriced.
I had terrible, terrible, terrible and stressful experiences with this hotel…
1. In presidential suite, there ‘is’ a jacuzzi. However, as the water boiler works for only 50liters at one time, it cannot afford to fill up the jacuzzi with constant hot water. If you want to fill it up, you should wait min. 20mins until the boiler heats up the new water in the tank. That means the filled water in jacuzzi will be cold. In fact, nobody can use it, only if you can have if you like to have iced cold water bath.
2. Boiler didn’t work on our first check-in date and it was fixed after 24 hours. During that time, we only had iced cold water. Even worse, we had to follow up and re-ask for repair as the staffs rotated.
3. As told in above, staffs in this hotel don’t communicate each other, in case we have an issue, it made a delay to be fixed.
4. The description of the room in the website is different in real. They don’t have air conditional and minibar in the room. Technically, as jacuzzi doesn’t work, I can say it is also not included.
5. They don’t ask if we need a room cleaning service / additional towels until we check out. FYI, we booked for 5 nights.
6. Out of all the above, their response was, without apologizing about inconveniences : if you don’t like our hotel, please leave.
7. We asked to meet the hotel manager, even she was in the hotel building (the staff went to downstairs for getting her approval, confirmation when we had a talk about the issues what we had), she told her staff that she is not available for 2 hours. We said we can wait, but she didn’t show up until we checked out…
