Panama City, Panama
Panama City is the capital and the biggest city of Panama. Lying along the Pacific Ocean, it is a modern, well-developed city and is one of the only 3 Central American cities that are listed as “World Cities”. Though being surrounded by thick rainforests, the city landscape is covered with many skyscrapers. There are also lots of amusement parks and family-friendly destinations in the city. Panama city is also loved for its lively nightlife, with lots of music and a good range of cafes and bars to choose from.
The currency accepted in Panama City is the Panamanian Balboa (PAB). 1 PAB is equal to 7.83 HKD.
Some well-known tourist destinations in the city are:
Panama Viejo:This is known as the Old Panama City. The former city was destroyed by fire in 1673. Plenty of historical sites can be found here, including the Panamá Viejo Cathedral. It is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Casco Viejo:This neighbourhood was built after the destruction of the above-mentioned Panama Viejo. The place reserves many of the original institutions and buildings of Old Panama City, and is also recognised as a World Heritage Site.
Biomuseo:Also known as The Biodiversity Museum: Panama Bridge of Life, the museum is opened in 2014 and contains 8 different exhibitions that showcase the biodiversity in Panama.
Palacio de las Garzas (Herons' Palace):This is the residence and the office of the President of Panama. It was built in 1673 and has gone through many phases of renovation. The place obtained its name by the fact that there are many herons, which were brought into the palace in 1922, roaming freely within the palace ground.
The main airport serving Panama City is the Tocumen International Airport (PTY). It is the main hub of Copa Airlines. The airport is located 3.5 miles from the city center. An average taxi ride from the airport to the city center should cost about 135 HKD. There are a few airlines that fly from Hong Kong to Panama City, including Air Canada, Air France, Asiana, British Airways, Delta, KLM and United.
Hong Kong citizens who wish to enter Panama for vacation purposes need to apply for a stamped Visa at the nearest Panama Embassy, which requires that their passport needs to have a minimum validity of 6 months.
Panama’s climate is characterised for its constant temperature throughout the year, which averages at about 27 °C. Summers are hot and very rainy, with temperatures averaging around 29 °C. The wettest month is October, with around 20 days observing rainfall. Winters are relative cooler and drier, with temperatures averaging around 23 °C. Sunshine is not always abundant due to lots of cloud formation, especially during summers. It is recommend that you visit Panama in the winter to avoid the prolonged rain, thus having better views of this beautiful city.
