The Gold Coast Airport, formerly known as Coolangatta Airport, is the primary airport serving this cosmopolitan city for both domestic and international travellers. The airport underwent a major redevelopment in 2010 that saw its main terminal doubling in size. The refurbished terminal serves both domestic and international flights and has a variety of facilities that one would expect from a modern world-class airport. There is a selection of shopping and dining outlets, as well as airline lounges for business travellers, baggage lockers, and currency exchanges. Qantas Airlines operates flights between Hong Kong and Gold Coast via Sydney, and Cathay Pacific Airlines operates flights with its code share partners. In 2016, Hong Kong Airlines will start to operate a seasonal direct flight from Hong Kong to Gold Coast.
The airport runway straddles both the states of Queensland and New South Wales, although the states run different time zones in the summer, the airport operates on Queensland Time throughout the year. The airport is located 25 km from Surfers Paradise and 100 km from Brisbane, and is served by the Tugun Bypass. Transport options to and from the airport include trains, tourist shuttles, buses, and taxis. The Gold Coast Tourist Shuttle operates a door-to-door airport transfer services for A$21 (approximately HK$120) per person. There is also an option to upgrade to their “Freedom Pass” which includes return airport transfer, unlimited daily transfer to the theme parks, and unlimited usage of the local Surfside Buslines network. Prices for the Freedom Pass start at A$79 (approximately HK$450) for a 3-day pass. The local TransLink public transport network is also available; buses such as service 777 and 760 will link you to a tram station where you can transfer. The taxi rank is conveniently located outside the terminal arrival area and is operated by Gold Coast Cabs. Airport transfers are flat rates with transfer to Surfers Paradise Hotels at A$59 (approximately HK$330) and A$49 (approximately HK$275) for Broadbeach hotels. Lastly, all major car hire companies such as Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, Budget, Europcar and RedSpot are available at the airport.
