Courtesy of the Huadong administration, the airline was established in 1988 after the then current China General Aviation was rendered unprofitable. The majority of the shares in the airline is owned by the government although there are shares that are public as well. China Eastern Airlines is a merger that comprises three airlines that had existed in the country before the China Eastern came into existence.

In 2012, the airline was recognised among the most valuable Chinese brands of its time. This was also the very first Chinese airline to purchase the Airbus which has become a major relevant addition to the fleet. China eastern relies on the A320 for domestic operations although it has also made orders for the A330 Airbus. The company has had its share of problems. For example, China Eastern had at one point tried to buy shares in Qantas Group airline and the deal was faced with challenges as Hong Kong authorities had denied Jetstar the licenses to operate or make such a deal.

Fly with China Eastern

China eastern has an online check-in platform from where passengers can actually check-in during the boarding process of flights. The baggage collection point is useful for those who do not want to struggle with baggage during travelling. Physical check in should occur about 25 minutes to departure. Special meals can also be ordered online and passengers are advised to confirm before booking.

Boarding process follows the cabins beginning with the first-class passengers to the economy class passengers.

The first-class cabin is equipped with six open suites that have a 180 degree recline to add to the comfort of the passenger. The business class cabins have about 52 flatbed seats which also have the 180-degree recline although the width is a bit reduced as compared to the seats in First Class. The economy class has about 258 seats that are just standard although they have a much-reduced recline. The planes can carry a total of 316 passengers in the three cabins. The seats in the First Class and business Class have ample legroom as compared to the space in economy class. The seats towards the back of the plane are not good and it would not be a wise idea to pick them. Additionally, the seats in first class are pod style and hence ensure much privacy to the traveller.

First class travellers even have an array of wines to choose from. China Eastern provides proper meals where the travellers have the option of either the western or the Chinese cuisine. Only subtle differences exist in terms of the services offered for the different travellers using the different cabins. Charging ports and Wi-Fi are also available in flight.

China eastern has a very beautiful entertainment system for the travellers. One can choose the movies or the magazines to read. However, the alternatives provided among the magazines may be hindered by language barriers. The airline has invested in technology as part of the entertainment experience for the passengers.
