Tigerair, a subsidiary of the SIA Group, is a low-cost carrier headquartered in Singapore. The airline was officially inaugurated in 2004 and has since established itself as one of the premier budget airlines in Asia. Tigerair has won the CAPA Low Cost Airline of the Year Award twice, in 2006 and 2010. Currently, Tigerair operates flights to approximately 45 destinations in the region from Hong Kong, to countries such as Singapore, Australia, Bangladesh, China, Greece, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The airline has an official website, a Twitter account, and a Facebook page. The Facebook pages features promotional content, travel tips, but more importantly, timely updates on any major events that may affect their passengers. Alternatively, passengers can also download the Tigerair application (available on both Android and Apple devices), which allows users to book flights, select seats, retrieve their booking, and access travel information.

Tigerair is wholly owned by Tigerair Airways Holdings Limited, and is its flagship airline. The airline also has affiliated airlines operating in other markets, such as Tigerair Australia, Tigerair Taiwan, and Tigerair Philippines. In November 2016, it was announced that Tigerair would come under another of Singapore’s low-cost carriers, Scoot, by the end of 2017. With the merger, the Tigerair brand will cease to exist.

Fly with Tigerair

Online Booking

Flight bookings can be made on the Tigerair Hong Kong website, which can be viewed in either English or Mandarin. The website allows not only the booking of flights, but also hotels, car rentals, airport transfers, and purchasing of travel insurance through affiliated websites. In addition, passengers can retrieve their flight information through the ‘Manage my Booking’ page, and check-in online through the website. The online booking system is fairly intuitive, allowing users to select their preferred flights to and from Hong Kong, with options to add on services as needed. For instance, luggage allowance can be selected for the return flight only to lower the flight cost.

Tigerair’s fleet consists mainly of Airbus A320s, and a few Airbus A319s, Boeing 787-8s, and Boeing 787-9s. As a low-cost carrier, most of the aircrafts are single-class economy seating only, with approximately 180 seats for the Airbus A320. Each of the seats are 18-inch wide and have a 30-inch pitch.

Online and Mobile Check-In

Online check-in is available for passengers between 1 and 72 hours before the departure time on the Tigerair website. Passengers will need the booking reference, last name, and departure city to complete the process. Please note that online check-in is not available for guests who need special assistance, passengers traveling with infants, booking made by travel agents, or flights with connections. Mobile check-in is also available for those with the Tigerair application.

Baggage Allowances

Standard flights do not include checked baggage, which must be purchased for an additional fee. Standard carry-on baggage allowances apply, and the combined weight of the two carry-on bags must not exceed 54 cm by 38 cm by 23 cm, and 10 kg in weight. For passengers who choose to purchase allowances for checked baggage, there are various options by weight. The basic package is called FlyBag, which includes one 20 kg check-in baggage, and costs anywhere from an additional HK$170 to HK$340 (this cost might differ based on your destination). This can be added to the online booking up to 4 hours before the departure time. Purchasing check-in baggage at the airport itself might be more costly and is subject to the airport rate.

Service on Board

As Tigerair is a low-cost carrier, there is no service on board. Any drinks, snacks, or meals will come at an additional charge. These can be pre-ordered during the flight booking, or can be purchased directly from the flight attendants when they start their on-board service. Cash and credit cards (Visa and MasterCard only) are both accepted. Be sure to check with the flight attendant about the currencies that are accepted.

Ticket Refund and Changing Policies

Tigerair does not allow any refunds under any circumstances, except in the case of death of the passenger. However, Tigerair may allow for the refund of any government taxes paid. A request must be submitted online through this link. Tigerair advises passengers to purchase travel insurance to cover the cost of any unanticipated disruptions. If passengers wish to make a change to their booking, for instance, changing the travel date or changing the name of the traveler, this must be done at least 4 hours before the departure time. Additional charges will be levied and passengers must also pay for the fare difference. Changes are not allowed for special promotional prices.

For passengers that are booking their flight far in advance, or who anticipate changes in their schedule, it may be worthwhile to pay an additional amount for booking flexibility. Booking Flexibility, available through the online booking, allows passengers to change their flight date or time once, as well as one name change. It costs approximately HK$210 per passenger.
